An Organizational Developer is the name for a specific type of management consulting job. The organizational developer will study the company, analyze how it works and then make recommendations to improve it's efficiency. Business knowledge, finance, psychology, sociology and leadership theory all come together in this interdisciplinary nature field of work.

As an OD, you would establish relationships with personnel, seek to understand the goals of the business, create plans for change to help better reach those goals and work with the organization to see that those plans are implemented. Another part of an OD's job is often to teach people to work together more effectively. Most organizational development jobs require at least a bachelor's degree but advanced degrees in psychology or business are a plus. They also work on inventory management solutions for the company's they work for.

In 2006, the average US salary for an organizational development specialist job was $61,000, but of course OD salaries will vary according to your experience in the field. Here are some examples of jobs in organizational development:

RTI International in the Raleigh-Durham North Carolina area is looking for an organization development and learning business partner. Salary is $90,000 - $120,000 per year. Travel is up to 15% of your time. 10 years of experience and a Master's Degree is required.

Several of the job duties include: "Demonstrate leadership by encouraging new ideas and organizational innovation","Collaborate across organizational boundaries to achieve common goals" and "Execute strategies for implementing training and organizational development initiatives in the stores".

Entry level jobs are usually found in the human resources department and are generally a lot of data entry and going over interviews, recruiting or training. You may decide to stay with one company or to work with an independent consulting firm. Working with a consulting firm would give you experience in more than one working environment.
